Kacang Pool Haji @ Plaza Angsana

Kacang Pool Haji is a name that I am totally clueless about. We were attracted by the thick loaf of bread and pictures on the signage which seem delicious.

Observing the couple at work; toasting the bread, spreading the kaya and cooking the egg.

After researching on what is Kacang Pool, it is actually a popular dish in Johor Bahru. Originally from Middle East, Kacang Pool may have gotten its name from "Ful", which is Ful Medames - an Egyptian dish consisting of mashed fava beans.

We adore the thick toast spread with margarine and it is eaten with a special dip. The thick sauce consist of minced beef, chopped onions, green chilli, and most importantly, mashed broad beans!  I never like broad beans, but after mixing them with beef, the aroma and taste turns out to be superb!

Squeeze a bit of lime into the dip, slowly break the egg and allow the yolk to mix well within the  thick and robust sauce. Apart from the strong aroma and flavour from the beef, it has a tinge of sour and sweetness. One toast is definitely not enough to satisfy our appetite!

Kacang Pool Haji - RM5

With that, we ordered Roti Bakar - RM1. Traditional toast with Kaya spread

Whether is it breakfast or afternoon tea snack, the toast paired beautifully with a cup of brewed coffee or tea.  Keep a lookout of Kacang Pool on your next road trip and you may be in for some sweet surprises. :)
