~ JB Makan & Shopping Trip Dec 13 - Day 1 (Part 1) ~

22nd December 2013 (Sunday) - It wasn't our first trip down to Johor Bahru for a makan trip but it was definitiely our first leading 2 other families (Tan family and Sengkangbabies) to explore and enjoy the good food in JB plus fulfilling everybody wishlist this Christmas! ^_^

Our 3 Days JB Makan & Shopping Trip with 3 Families

6:15am - We meet up with the Tan family and crossed over the border rather smoothly after experiencing 30 minutes of heavy traffic on the causeway.

8:00am - Arrived at Gui Yuan Restoran (桂苑港式點心茶樓) at Taman Johor Jaya.

Name: Gui Yuan Restoran (桂苑港式點心茶樓)
Location: 27, Jalan Dedap 8, Taman Johor Jaya, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor
Tel: 012-723 5560, 012-713 8327
Opening Hours: Morning: 7am to 12 noon, Night: 8.30pm to 12:30am
Off Day : Every Monday Night & Tuesday Morning
GPS : 1.540033, 103.805061

There are a lot of eateries around Taman Johor Jaya and we were lucky to spot this Dim Sum stall with lots of people up early for their breakfast. Nothing beats having dim sum on a breezy Sunday morning!

I love the atmosphere here even though we were seated in the open space. Baskets of dim sum were being steamed while we were enjoying our pot of tea (香片). Business is extremely good as families keep flowing in. I can smell the scent of dim sum from a distance.

8:30am - The wait wasn't that long and our orders were served. After sampling, our comments for the dim sum here is THUMBS UP! The ingredients are fresh, meat is tender and the skin of the dim sum is soft. Siew Mai (烧卖) was kiddos' favourite and we had to order more to fulfill their satisfaction.

What we ordered:  Siew Mai (烧卖), Tang Bao (汤包), Cha Shao Bao (叉烧包), Shrimp dumping (虾饺), Glutinous rice (糯米鸡), Chicken feet (鸡脚), Chee Cheong Fun (猪肠粉), Brocolli with fish meat and more.

Not only was Gui Yuan Restoran's dim sum tasty, it is also very affordable! We ordered and ate to our heart's content and our total bill for 4 adults, 4 children was RM102.40  (~SGD40). Definitely worth the trip down and I would love to be back again to try their other items!

Having Dim Sum together is a good opportunity for a get-together. While adults were chit-chatting and sipping their hot tea, children had fun playing after their meal. We had a great start for our makan trip!

9:40am Since we were still early, we decided to head down to TESCO EXTRA PLENTONG to shop within the hypermart.

Name: TESCO EXTRA PLENTONG
Location: No. 1 Persiaran Desa Tebrau, Taman Desa Tebrau, 81100 Johor Bahru
Opening Hours: Sunday - Thursday (8am - 11pm), Friday - Saturday & Public Holiday (8am - 1am)
GPS: 1.564671, 103.79148

Stalls were already opened and there wasn't any crowd.

TESCO has store outlets around Malayisa and Tesco Extra Plentong hypermart is pretty huge just like walking in to Giant at Tampines.

We bought some sweets and snacks here.

11:30am - We arrived at KSL Resort and rooms were not ready.

1145am - 12:15pm - Children had their first load of fun at the indoor play area at Go N Play Playground while hubby went to purchase the Digi smartcards. :) This will be our main communication tool during our stay here.

12:50pm - Met up with Sengkangbabies who joined us later and we are finally a complete group! Everybody was hungry and we decided to settle for Soon Soon Heng Bak Kut Teh (stall located just opposite KSL City Mall).

Name: Soon Soon Heng Bak Kut Teh Restoran (顺顺兴肉骨茶)
Location: 43, Jalan Serigala, Taman Abad, 80250 Johor Bahru
GPS: 1.486233,103.761647

Business was very brisk but we were lucky to get 2 tables for 14 of us!

Salted vegetables and peanuts are perfect side dishes for Bak Kut Teh. I love the salted vegetables served at Soon Soon. Not too salty, oily and the taste was just nice to my liking!

Bak Kut Teh - We did not order a lot of innards as there were children among our group. I was a little disappointed with the broth as it was a little too salty. Luckily, the taste of the herbal soup was not overwhelmed by pepper and the soft, tender meat made up for it.

Sizzling hot Pig Trotters in dark sauce - This is my personal favourite! I love the sweetness of the sauce! It goes perfectly well with my rice and the children love it too! The meat was soft, juicy and tender that we had to order a second pot!

Pricing of the Bak Kut Teh is placed on the wall. Pretty reasonable and affordable too. We spent ~RM103 (~SGD40) for our lunch with the Tan family.

1:30pm - We walked back to KSL Resort to check if our rooms were ready. It was peak period and occupancy rate was high. While waiting, we sat down and enjoyed our free flow of Teh Tarik, juices and biscuit packets. I must compliment the Teh Terik served at KSL Resort. It was not too sweet and the aroma was fragrant and satisfying. I could not resist going for more cups until we managed to get 1 room to place our luggages. :)
