[JB] New IKEA store at Tebrau in Johor Bahru

After much anticipation, Swedish furniture giant retailer, IKEA Tebrau (Johor Bahru) finally opens its door to the public on 16 Nov 2017. Said to be the largest store in South-East Asia, IKEA Tebrau outlet span across 46,713 sq meter with 54 showrooms.

We were there on the first opening weekend and a queue was already forming before the store opens. Thankfully we were allowed to enter at 9.30am that morning and the crowd made a beeline to the 750-seat IKEA restaurant.

View of the restaurant before the crowd swamp in.

Within minutes, the restaurant was filled with diners queuing up to sample IKEA's signature Swedish meatballs. Seats were also filled up very quickly.

As we find familiar food on the menu, we also noticed new additions that is not available in Singapore outlet.

How about the pricing of the food?

Swedish meatballs (RM12/10pcs)
Fried chicken wings (RM16.50/6pcs or RM11.50/4pcs)
Assorted muffin (RM1.50)
Fried Mee Hoon (RM1)
French toast with sausages and baked beans (RM4 - Only for Breakfast)
Mineral bottle water (RM1)

After breakfast, we headed on to the showroom for a walk. It feels very much like shopping at IKEA Singapore, only the prices are generally slightly cheaper or comparable. Unlike the crowd we faced at the restaurant, it was much easier to walk about in the showroom.

Items are neatly organised and placed and you just follow the arrows and map around the store to find your way through.

So how much is the price difference and if it is worth driving all the way across the border to IKEA Tebrau? We had a look at a few items as we stroll through the store.

Melltorp Table (RM99 VS SGD39). Price difference of ~ $3

Mala Easel (RM79 VS SGD29.90) - Price difference of ~$3.50

Ording Cutlery Stand (RM7.90/RM14.90 VS SGD5.90/SGD7.90) - Price difference of ~$2.60/$2.90

Raskog Trolley (RM149 VS SGD59) - Price Difference of ~$10

Antilop high chair with tray (RM49.90 VS SGD29.90) - Price difference of ~$13

We did not look at the bulky furniture items as it only takes up boot space. Generally it appears the items at IKEA Tebrau is cheaper and its a good deal if you are around the area and would like to make some small purchases back. We bought Gladys some drawing paper from Mala and Mala's paper roll storage for her drawing interest. It was about 5% to 10% cheaper compared to the price in Singapore.

Spacious and bright setting with ease of walking around the store.

We cannot leave IKEA without getting some hotdogs and ice-cream! Its really a great deal here as ice-cream only cost RM0.80 (~SGD0.25), almost half price compared to the Singapore store! Price of a hotdog is RM2, yogurt at RM1.50 and a combo set of a drink and hotdog is only RM3.

The ice-cream taste just as good and we would love to come back for more.

IKEA Tebrau is located near Aeon Mall Tebrau City and Tesco. With its opening, there are now more shopping options in the area.
