Handmade Italian Gelato @ Alfero Artisan Gelato

[Media Invite]

Last month, we were invited for a Gelato treat at Artisan Alfero Gelato. Visiting its retail outlet at MacPherson, is a quaint shop tucked quietly at a corner within the housing estate. It is indeed a hidden gem where I will least expect a Gelato shop to be situated. Despite its conceal location, it seems to be a rather popular spot for students who will drop by for a cup of gelato after school.

Nice playground outside the retail shop.

Prior to our visit, I always thought that Gelato (Italian word for Ice-cream) and Ice-cream is the same. After meeting up with Marco Alfero himself, I learnt more about Gelato and what separates Alfero Gelato uniquely from the other ice-creams.

Ladies who are afraid of putting on weight can enjoy a cooling treat without feeling guilty as Alfero Gelato only has 2 to 9% of fat compared to the normal ice-cream. Australian free-range milk is used as free-range milk come from 100% grass-fed cows which have grazed in pasture all year round rather than being fed a processed diet. Grass feeding improves the quality of the cow's milk, and makes the milk richer in omega-3 fats, vitamin E, beta-carotene, and CLA. In addition, Marco insist on using natural, fresh and high quality ingredients in his gelato without additions of colouring, additives and artificial flavouring, so you get to taste the real flavour!

You can choose to enjoy your gelato in a cup, or top on waffles or cones. Waffles is definitely my pick.

Menu on the board.

Unlike the other ice-cream/gelato shops, you will not see the gelato openly on display at the counter tops. This is Marco's effort and dedication to serve his customers the best gelato by preserving the perfect texture and smoothness of the gelato. Storing it in the POZZETTO cabinet prevents air and light from contaminating the quality of the gelato. "Seeing is good but tasting is better!"

There are many flavours to pick from and all of them looks so good! I am spoilt with choices! Upon further enquiry, the favourite and most popular pick is Pistachio! To perk our taste buds, new flavour will also be introduced periodically, this includes local flavours like Durian and Cempedak.

Hubby had a combination of durian, cempedak and avocado. Not only does it look colourful, the flavour blends in beautifully and taste very natural. From the subtle taste of the milky avocado, to the sweetness of durian and finally the strong aroma of cemepdak. I find the gelato very refreshing and interesting.

After sampling a few flavours, Denver & Gladys picked Pistachio and Bacio as their personal favourite and I can tell why. Bacio is a sweet combination of hazelnut and chocolate whereas Pistachio, a greenish seed from the cashew family, taste extremely alluring. It is not overly sweet, yet very aromatic, smooth and rich.

My personal pick is Pistachio, Hazelnut and Coconut. I am a big fan of Hazelnut and am delighted that Alfero Gelato uses hazelnut "Tonda Gentile" (round kind) that comes from Piedmont region in the north-west of Italy, which is considered the best in the world for its' sweetness and intense aroma. A spoonful of hazelnut melted my heart and how I wish I can take the whole tub back!

Enjoying our Gelato treat where every spoon brings happiness.

After sampling the Gelato at Alfero, I must say it is one of the best that I have tried. Gelato is not as icy cold compared to ice-cream which also means I don't get a brain freeze. It has a lower fat content and every spoonful is simply heavenly. We love to come back at Alfero Artisan Gelato for more true Italian Gelato that even the Godfather loves it!
